Update - February 27, 2009
It has been a while since my last update. I had some trouble with my hotmail being taken over by a scam artist. They sent out emails asking for money, saying I was stranded in London without passport or money and it has taken me about a week to regain access to my hotmail account but it is now mine again. I have learned a valuable lesson about givign out passwords to anyone--even those with realistic looking messages from hotmail staff. Never give out your passwords to anyone.
We have all been busy here in the studio with various projects. Haruko and I have been working on a couple of collaborative pieces (see the paper jaguars), and Adan and I completed a clay mural with jaguars as the theme. There have been many distractions but we are getting work done.
Patricia Deadman is due to arrive on March 9th so we are all excited about her being here. Maria Luisa de Villa has come out to the studio in Etla to meet everyone and yesterday, Haruko and I spent the day in Oaxaca City with her. We spent time in a few galleries looking at past works of maria Luisas, and in the evening we took in a film by the womens film collective in Ogloolik called Before tomorrow.
Adan and Lorena joined us with ther indigenous friends, Ramon and Amelia. We managed to meet the 5 Inuit women who had come down to be at the screening and it felt like a homecoming somehow. Throat singing, drum dancing and scenes of the arctic. The artists were very impressed with their film which was a look at live before contact with white explorers. There was also a presentation by Artcirq--an acrobatic troupe consisting of youth from the eastern arctic and the coordinator from Montreal. They had invited 3 clowns from Monterey who happened t be performing in Oaxaca City to join the performance so it was an entertaining and impromptu performance.
More to come. Regarding food, scorpions and more...
