As part of
our mandate to promote Yukon artists, The Dawson City Arts Society is
pleased to offer creative people their own private self administered web
site space on the dawsonarts.com web community.
Each account
holder is entitled to approximately 5 megabytes of space (this may be
increased in the future). That is the equivalent of about 80 to150 pages
available for your personal use.
Your web
address will be www.dawsonarts.com/~username.
This is a
great opportunity for you to showcase and sell your work online. We do
not charge commission and best of all, there is no cost to you.
Even if you
already have a web site somewhere else, it probably wouldn't hurt to expand
your exposure on the internet.
What's
the catch?
Who qualifies for an account?
How does it work?
What will I gain by being on the internet?
How will it help DCAS if I join your Web Community?
Won't someone steal images from my web site?
Many websites offer free space, why should I sign up with
dawsonarts.com?

What's
the catch?
- Well,
there is none, except that you are responsible for creating and uploading
your own content (help
is available, if you need it).
- If you
do open an account we require that you post meaningful content within
a reasonable amount of time, say, 2 or 3 weeks. Please don't use your
page only to re-direct to another web site.
- You must
be a member in good standing of the Dawson City Arts Society ($15.00
per year). You can join here.
- At this
time there are only 100 accounts available. So, if you want to get on
board better do it now.
- We also
ask that any material you post stay within the bounds of copyright law
and that no illegal material be posted such as hate literature or pornography
(not that anyone would do such a thing, but it needs to be stated).
- In other
words, the Dawson City Arts Society would be unhappy about any community
website that reflected badly on us.

Who
qualifies for an account?
- As
stated before, you must be a paid up member of the Dawson City Arts
Society. You can join here.
- Any discipline
in the arts qualifies.
- Artists
outside of the Yukon that have a connection to our Society. e.g. visiting
instructors, artists in residence or if you have had an exhibition at
our gallery.
- Commercial
galleries do not qualify for webspace.

How
does it work?
- First,
you need to apply using the online form.
- You will
then be notified by email with instructions on where to begin uploading
your web pages.
- Getting
your web site online is easy. This is done using your home computer
and a web browser such as Netscape or Explorer.
- It is
required that you have a FTP client installed on your computer in order
to transfer files to your web site. These are free utilites available
for download at places like http://www.shareware.com.
- If you
want a more complex site you will first need to prepare your pages with
your computer using a web page editor such as Adobe Pagemill, Macromedia
Dreamweaver or the editor that comes with Netscape Communicator 4.7
called Composer.
- These
and other HTML editors require a bit of a learning curve, but are fairly
intuitive and certainly spare you of the job of handwriting code for
your page.
- If all
of this is too daunting or time consuming perhaps a friend can help
or as a last resort hire someone to do it for you.

What
will I gain by being on the internet?
- Whether
it is a conspiracy or not we do not know. The reality is that if you
are serious about publicizing your creative activities, having a web
presence is becoming more essential than ever.
- It will
enable you to publish your work to a vast audience world wide in a very
cost effective way.
- Your
web site makes a great calling card. When soliciting galleries just
refer them to your site. If there is an interest in your work, follow
up with your C.V., slides and other promotional material.
- Even
if you are not interested in selling, what a great way to share ideas
with other artists in your field.
- It is
no secret that quite a few Yukon artists are doing very well because
of their web sites.

How
will it help DCAS if I join your Web Community?
-
You will
help us fulfill our mandate to promote Yukon art and culture.
-
-
Our Society
will have quick access to artists/craftspeople as a resource for potential
instructors, artists in residence and invitational exhibits.
-
-
Content
is the lifeblood of any website. The more dawsonarts.com has to offer,
the more interest will be taken in what we do. This can only be of
benefit to everyone involved.

Won't
someone steal images from my web site?
- Firstly,
there is a thing called copyright law which basically states that the
moment you create something original you alone own the rights to that
item of intellectual property.
- Of course
this hasn't stopped people from appropriating the work of others in
whole or in part.
- Here's
the trade off. Any time you take your work out of the studio to display
on the internet, in a publication or an exhibition. You are inviting
people to express the 'sincerest form of flattery ' namely, plagarism.

Many
websites offer free space, why should I sign up with dawsonarts.com?
- Many
dotcom companies will offer you free websites. Unfortunately, everytime
someone looks at your page, it gets flooded with pop up advertising
banners that you have no control over. The hosting company makes money
by selling advertising space on your page. That's the catch.
Only 100
accounts are available! So, what are you waiting for!?
Apply now.
